Does anyone else have a partner/spouse/SO/whatever whose tastes are wildly different than yours? How do you handle it?

My husband would *like* to do our home in a primarily... contemporary (I'm trying not to snark his aesthetics, because I do realize they're subjective) and mine are very 'farmhouse'. We're currently planning a bathroom remodel, for example, and he wants a black jacuzzi. I want a clawfoot tub. I like the original (100 year old) hardwood floors and want to just refinish them; he hates the floors and wants carpet or to have them covered with something extremely high gloss and darkly colored.

We've been married 12 years. We have weathered a lot of storms and done a lot of compromising, but I swear to god we're going to kill each other before this house is finished.

Urine smell in clothing & Bissell Cleanview Helix

Hi everyone. :)

Two unrelated questions for you:

1. I do laundry for a family, and the husband/father is physically disabled and has incontinence issues. He uses pads, but I'm guessing they occasionally leak, because there are about three soiled pairs of pants per week. I started to wash his clothes separately because it left the smell on everyone's stuff, but I don't want to leave him with stinky clothes, either. I have tried switching the detergent a few times now and experimented with different amounts of vinegar, but no luck. How can I tackle the lingering smell of urine? It's faint, but it's there.

2. My fiancé and I went out this evening for some light shopping and wound up coming home with a Bissell Cleanview Helix. Any feedback about this model? It has 29 reviews and four and a half stars on Target.com, but I'd like to hear your experiences as well. It's unopened, so I can return it if I should. :) As far as my vacuum needs go, I live with my fiancé, our 2-year-old, and a puppy who rarely sheds in a medium-size apartment with carpet and linoleum.

Thanks!

You have been warned ...

I finally joined the 21st century and got a new phone with a camera. Now all the true horrors I find that would have gone unposted will now be staring out of your computer screens.

You have been warned ... ;-)

Green bottle with beads is packaged and ready to ship tomorrow.

3 clear slumped bottles special ordered for photo mounting, done, packaged and ready to ship tomorrow.

The tree of life card display is washed (finally), sanded and primed and is drying.

The ornament holder is also washed and primed, also drying.

While I was shopping for clear bottles yesterday at the recycle center, I could not resist fishing out (or having my devoted husband fish out)these beautiful colored bottles. I found 1 bright blue one that just screamed "Melt me!," a sexy brown one, several regular ones, a few green ones. I decided to fire the blue one today with a couple of common guys. I wanted to fire it super low so that it would slump flat, but the embossed "Blue Nun" would still be legible. Not that Blue Nun is all that funny, I just wanted to see if I could control the slump. I thought a bottle like Jack Daniels would be neat if you can still see what the bottle is. There is quite a pretty eagle on the side of that bottle that might be worth saving. Anyway, it worked. My only regret is:

1. The blue bottle must have rolled over slightly so Blue Nun is a bit off center.
2. The bottle on the bottom shelf didn't slump all the way because I had to keep the top cool enough to save the embossing.

I guess I'll have to make sure that the cooler bottles stay on the bottom shelf and to hell with the top ones? Eh. Right when I think I got this slumping down pat, I find no consistency.

What do you do when your waiting for bottles to slump? Weld Christmas stuff. I made another ornament holder that looks something like a sleigh. It just ended up that way. And I made a large snowman wall decoration (haven't decided if he will have hooks for ornaments yet)with a very swirly and swooshy patterned waistcoat. I must have been getting tired though or really into what I was doing, because I was all bent over my work and pulled the trigger on my welder without pulling down my helmet first.

I still have a spot swimming in front of my left eye and flash burn. Not bad enough to really hurt me, but my eyes feel like they are full of sand.

I am looking at the eye drops with longing, but I wonder if it will just sting like the dickens and make things worse? This is a little more than just dry eye...

Ahh, I did it...it feels goo...oh burn a little...not bad though. More like wet sand now.

And that's the play by play of my eye moistening. Tune in next time when I clip my toenails.

I stopped knitting long enough to update my knitting gallery, since it's been almost a year and a half since I last did that. Whoops. Heh.

Plus there are now so many things in there that I broke up the Quick Find at the top into categories, so it'd be more...um...quick.

I'm not going to list everything out individually but everything from Elephant Girl down is new. Enjoy.

locks --- successfully changed!

it took 3 extra trips to menards and many many many minutes longer than it ought to, but now my house has brand new doorknobs & locks! For the first time in 5+ years! (impetus = the last roommate didn't return her keys. or if she did, i have absolutely no memory of it and no extra keys anywhere to show for it... PLUS.... before today i'd never bothered having my locks re-keyed from the time of the previous owners either. good thing that they either were honorable people or else they just took things that I don't need as I don't even know of anything being missing. except for my library card, but i recall stashing that "in a safe place" about 2 weeks ago. too safe apparently as i can no longer locate it.)

in other news, this year I went to 3 thanksgiving dinners. that's pretty awesome. i <3 turkey! i also painted 80% of my kitchen ceiling and chatted with a friend I haven't been very attentive to. there was goign to be a trip to the movies this afternoon, but since she has trouble procrastinating and right now she's actually enjoying writing/reviewing the essays she's writing to get in to grad school, I figure that waiting a bit to see a movie would be in everyone's best interest. (my best interest because I still feel like cleaning/sorting/straightening --- huh. i wish i knew how to turn that desire on on purpose)

Looking for auxiliary freezer advice

Yesterday, to my delight, my hubby started seriously looking at chest freezers. (An auxiliary freezer has been my pipe dream for quite some time now.) We seriously looked at a 7 cu ft chest freezer, a 9 cu ft chest, and -- to my complete surprise -- and 8.8 cu ft upright freezer. I hadn't even realized that those existed!

So, I'm now looking for advice. Assuming that cost/space were not an issue, which would you go for: a 7' chest, a 9' chest, or the 8.8' upright?

Everyone I know who's had an auxiliary freezer has had a chest freezer. I know that those are marginally more energy efficient, but there's also the issue of getting to the things at the bottom. I love the idea of a freezer with shelves (I have a side-by-side refrigerator, so am quite used to that format) but worry that it would be less efficient in terms of actual storage space.

Thoughts? Experiences? Any and all advice is welcome!

Postcards & Letters & Journals, Oh My!

I've saved letters & postcards sent to me since I left for college. I'd like to pare down the physical amount of STUFF in my house & would like to do something with these. I'd like to save the contents of the letters if not the physical letters themselves. Has anyone done a project like this? I'm overwhelmed.

Hello. I am new to this so please bear with me.
My name is Lindsey. I hav two wonderful children. Madeline who is almost 2 and Delmon who is 7 months. As you all know life is very busy with lots of diapers. I am thinking it may be time to start potty training my daughter and I could use help. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The perfect Hot Toddy

I am having a holiday get together and I would love to serve Hot Toddies. I had the perfect recipe but I can't find it anywhere. I found it in Bust (or Venus) magazine a few years ago..All the ones I have found online use tea and some sort of liquor like tequila or vodka. The recipe I loved used 1 cup of cider to 1 shot of rum and shimmered with spices like whole cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and something else (that something else is why I am posting) It made the house smell wonderful and it was delicious and all you really taste is warm spicy goodness. Does anyone have a recipe similar to this or know of this recipe?

Boulder's coupons

A while ago I noticed that Boulder's gym was regularly mailing out two-for-one coupons. Lately I've just been shoving all my junk mail in the recycling, but I would like to go climbing with some friends soon. Are those coupons still in circulation? Maybe I can get a couple of them this week. Or, if anyone has some saved up and wants to mail them to me, that would be awesome too. :)

Gracias!

Wall Mounted Dish Drainer/Rack

I have exactly ZERO counterspace. My dish drainer is currently propped precariously on the two inches of counter next to my sink (it's REALLY two inches), and covers half of my sink space. Since I am pretty much constantly cooking something, I constantly have that stupid thing on my sink.

I specifically would like something like this.. )

But for the past few hours of googling, all I can find is some metal thing by Ikea that I dislike (and wouldn't work) and some giant, expensive wooden things. I might just be having a google-fail but if anyone would be able to help find something similar and inexpensive, I'd GREATLY appreciate it.

i was only without my phone since Wednesday, but when it is the sum total of your personal and professional life... well... saying it out loud, if the totality of my life is in a phone, that is somewhere between sad an tragic.

am still ecstatic to have it back.
